Day 3: Calmer Waters

Here’s a side-by-side shot of what I’ve been working on. On the left is a plein air field study I’d done down at the lake probably 7 or 8 years ago. When I tried translating that out into a large, studio piece, I didn’t like that rough-looking water. I went down to the lake on Easter Sunday to take a good look at the waves. The water was quite calm and there were no crashing waves. I did some pencil sketches and came home. Today I scraped down some of the heavy, white waves and repainted them in smaller, less contrasty colors. Also worked on the sky and clouds a bit until the cats told me it was time to quit for the day.

That’s Mr. Wonderful on the left. He snoozed on the heated seed tray mat all afternoon.
