Painting with Cal

Heat wave in November! All the way up to 73 here in northwest Michigan. I’d spent much of the day cleaning up my flower beds and raking, but around 3 PM I thought the hell with this! Called up my friend Cal Kemppainen and we met at one of our favorite spots along Lake Michigan, Antrim County Recreation Area. From the parking lot it’s about a 2-block hike down to the lake. I was pretty exhausted from yard work, but I knew painting would perk me right up.

By the time we got set up to paint, it was about 4 PM. Shadows were growing deep. Sunlit highlights only lasted for seconds at a time. No time to dilly-dally! A few families walked past, clad in shorts and T-shirts. Everybody was enjoying the rare heat wave. I think some of the kids had even been in swimming!

Painting sunsets is not for the faint of heart! They change by the second. Just slap down the shapes as quickly as you see ’em.
