A gorgeous day here in northern Michigan! I sat in the shade along the creek and painted this view of goldenrod. The frogs were having some kind of conversation and my cat, Mr, Kitters, guarded me from marauding chipmunks.

And here’s my setup:

From there, I loaded up my car and drove over to another favorite haunt: S. Peebles Road. It’s actually what they call a “seasonal” road: not plowed in the winter. It cuts through a beautiful, thick maple woods. Thousands of wild raspberry plants grow in the dim light under the maples. I spied a wonderful chicken-of-the-woods mushroom — in perfect condition — about 5 pounds of it. Tomorrow I’ll cook it. And yes, it really does taste like chicken!

I’ve always thought this spot was so peaceful and beautiful. Over to the right, beyond the trees is the famed Toad Lake. Here’s my setup:
