A week or so ago I snapped a photo of a mother deer and her twins in the bracken along my driveway. The photo was not the greatest. Pretty blurry. Here’s my photo:
I thought I may as well give it a shot. I’d hoped to find some deer paintings of Robert Bateman to get some ideas of how he handled things, but all my copies of his books were ruined in the flood back in June.
Deer up in northern Michigan have a bit of a reddish tinge to their coats in the summer. At first I went too crazy over the red. Had to tone it down a bit. Maybe it needs more? I managed to find some deer paintings by Bateman online, but they were of masculine, tough winter deer, bounding fearlessly through the snow. Not tender, little fawns in the wildflowers and bracken. So I did what I could….
