Day 1: Grannies

I’d bought a bag of Grannie Smiths a couple months ago to feed to the deer. One particular deer, that is. He/she was the runt of a litter and the other deer he hung out with didn’t like him. He was scrawny and about 6″ shorter than his cohorts. They’d all swam in to feed — and kick him away. Even his/her fur didn’t look right. Like maybe his momma deer had been canoodling with a coyote. I’d throw him an apple whenever I thought of it.

Then Spring came and I got busy and the deer found bits of greenery to eat out in the woods. Every once in a while I’d notice this bowlful of apples and think hmmmm — I ought to paint that! So finally got a start this afternoon. Had to shove my flats of seed starts to the side to make room for the setup. That’s a vintage tablecloth from the 50’s, snagged at the Antiques Fair up in Petoskey. Looks like something my mom would have used on our yellow Formica table.

The most challenging part for me is to draw a perfect elipse…. Stay tuned and see if I get it right…..
