Day 1: Forsythia

A beautiful (but chilly!) day here in northern Michigan and I thought I’d try painting a view of my forsythia en plein air.

Quite challenging! All those petals! And the daffodils in the background! Holy moly. For a long while I didn’t think I’d be able to pull it off. But (as I always say) the key to painting a complicated scene is learning to control your panic. What helped it was having a deep sigh, then taking a good look and realizing those background greens of the daffodil leaves are actually quite blue-ish and rather dark. Hopefully I can get outside tomorrow (if it’s not raining — or snowing!) and refine this some more.

Here’s my setup:

And here’s my cats, supervising. Picasso (the tuxedo) simply MUST drink out of every vase and/or bucket. Mr. Kitters, the tabby, is checking to make sure he’s not missing out on anything fabulous.
