Silk Purses/Sow’s Ears

I finally was able to get out of my driveway on Tuesday (after our 2nd Snowmageddon of the season) and went to Traverse City in search of white roses. I saw 3 bunches in the grocery stores but they all looked pretty bad: brown petals. Ach! No good! I finally stopped to look in Elk Rapids and found what I thought were beautiful blooms. When I got home and unwrapped them, all the leaves were shriveled and crispy. Sigh. What to do?

The next day I went up to Monarch, a high-end silk flower shop in Petoskey. I bought 1 stem of white rose — and thank goodness for that! I am using that for my model (see above).

I suppose it’s not a good idea to buy roses right after Christmas. Here’s how they looked today:

At first I panicked — how could I paint sometime so pitiful? But I decided to give it a try anyway. Another surprising thing: white roses aren’t really white! Here’s now things look at the end of Day 1:
