The Jordan River Road, south of East Jordan, off M66, is not for the faint-hearted. Just a dirt road, packed with potholes, sometimes long stretches of gooey much or sand, the few times I’ve driven there, I can’t help but think of the early settlers with their covered wagons, trying to maneuver. I was following my painter friend Melanie, thankful that she knew her way around. It’s a maze back there. I’d hate to be driving in there after dark. The road crews don’t plow back there, so snowmobiles are about the only things that can get around in winter. The river itself is cold, clear, riddled with fallen cedars. In other words, a trout-haven.

Melanie and I found one of the few parking spots and went down a small hill to the water. Carrying art supplies, weaving through the thick undergrowth, trying not to step into the muck is a bit of an adventure. I set up my easel and painted quickly, sinking slowly in the mire. A merganser swam by. Bolete mushrooms were being eaten by slugs and a leopard frog kept away from our clumsy boots. A fun day!
