Day 4: Tackling the Background

It was kind of scary to try this. I wasn’t sure if it would turn out horrible — or wonderful. Not done with it yet. Seeing the work of Kehinde Wiley just blew me away! I’m experimenting with wild, complex backgrounds. They’re almost more difficult to paint than the actual subject. Clyde Aspevig, one of my best teachers, told us, “Never be afraid to experiment!” I heard ya, Clyde!

After finishing this one I’m sure I’ll be quite happy to paint a few plein air fields of snow….
