Growing up in Iowa back in the 50’s, there were few rules about Halloween. Nothing was specifically stated regarding trick-or-treat night. My cousins and I would gather forces 2 (or maybe 3) weekends ahead of time and go trick-or-treating in our different neighborhoods. Adult supervision back then? Hah!
Then I can’t forget the time my neighbor kid, Billy Hull, and I decided we’d go trick-or-treating. It was in the middle of summer and a beautiful, sunny afternoon. We were probably no more than 4 or 5 years old. I remember borrowing his mother’s lipstick to decorate our faces. Off we went with paper bags, ringing doorbells, yelling “Trick-or-treat!”. I don’t remember much about the candy but I sure remember the laughs.
