Threat of Rain – Rex Beach

“Threat of Rain – Rex Beach— plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8×10″ by Margie Guyot

There are lots of local plein air groups up here in northern Michigan. This morning several of us met up at Rex Beach. The weather was kind of “iffy” — maybe rain, maybe not. I wore my heavy-duty, goosedown jacket — just in case. It sometimes comes in handy. It can feel quite balmy at home, but sometimes that wind comes howling over the lake something awful. But today it was nice. Cloudy, but pleasant otherwise. The spot I chose was where a trickle was emptying into the lake. A pair of swans paddled around, ignoring us humanoids on the beach. Here’s one:

Several other painters trickled in. Here’s a happy pair of watercolorists:

It was good to return to Rex Beach. Just last month this area had suffered a record-breaking ice storm. This was the first day I dared to try to drive here, fearing fallen trees had blocked the road. All cleared out this morning, luckily.

And here’s my setup:

My painting was covered with tiny midges, but I managed to pick them out with tweezers once I got home. At least they weren’t May flies!

  1. Nice painting. I’m happy for you to be having good weather. It is windy
here today, but a nice temperature.

Worked hard all day in the orchard and flower garden. The flower garden
is shaping up. I haven’t planted any annuals yet, but soon. I could use
a few more perennials. Jenelle gave me 7 red geraniums so I planted them
to make a mass of them but not in a circle, too boring. I also planted
snapdragons. Of course, I had to dig big holes to put the gopher baskets
in first. Such a lot of work. Patrick loaded 6 wheel barrels full of
chips and I spread them under the stone fruit in the side yard and the
young shrubs along the fence line. I need at least 4 more loads. I love
    these free chips.

After all that I’m itching to start winding a warp, I need to get
something on the loom before I go crazy and that’s what I’m going to do now.

Have a good evening. I go to the Fiber Guild meeting in the morning to
give that lady her painted warps. I’ll try to be kind to her but I’m
pissed at her. I won’t let her take advantage of me again, that’s for
sure. I’d be staying home and attending on Zoom if it weren’t for that
and save an hour of driving. However, I’ll so to the grocery store on
the way home, it’s senior Wednesday tomorrow.
