Button Bush

“Button Bush” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 11×14″ by Margie Guyot

I’d been eyeing this for weeks, meaning to paint it. It’s one of about a dozen or more button bushes I’d planted out in the swamp. And there are a couple more dozen more to come — I’ve been pampering seedlings in a raised bed. I love their little “buttons”. Then I found out they attract some kind of parasitic wasp that likes to lay its eggs on Japanese beetles. Aha! Anyway — I’ve become enamored of the paintings of Jamie Wyeth. And he’s done all kinds of unusual subjects. Which I guess have emboldened me to paint what excites me.

It was early morning when I started this. The sunlight hadn’t come over the hillside yet. But when it comes, it sure moves fast! I painted furiously, interrupted often by the purring demands of my little Siamese cat, Bernie Sanders. He wouldn’t take no for an answer. I’d have to set down my brush and pick him up and whisper love murmurings to him. Here’s a photo of him:

And here’s my setup, on the boardwalk I had built last year. If it wasn’t for this, it’d be impossible to get through the much, fallen logs and 7 – 8 foot high grasses.
