
Could also have been titled “Rugosa – Funkified“. Several days ago I dug out 7 or 8 Rugosa roses that were wanting to take over the world — and transplanted them to new spots. I’d trimmed them back a little so there’d be less stress on the plant. Not one to waste anything beautiful, I stuck a piece into a bud vase and took it into the studio to paint it.
This is what I was looking at:

It was “OK”, but a bit too “B-flat“, as we music majors would say. Too ordinary, too expected.

The bottom of the painting looked too “lonely”. Too boring. Too beige. I went to bed last night, fretting over it. Then this morning I knew what to do: “Funk-ify” it. There was an odd-looking vase in my back room, just begging to be painted. I changed things today:
