Inspired by Sun Dogs…

“Mitchell Road” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8 x 16″ by Margie Guyot

This morning I saw 2 sun dogs (see note below) in the sky and it got me so excited I could hardly stand it! How could I NOT go out painting? Especially since snow’s forecast for this area. But alas, I didn’t paint the sun dogs. Instead, I painted 2 other views of “late fall in northern Michigan”. This first view I’d painted several times over the years, but it’s been a while. One of my favorite spots, Mitchell Road runs south, off Bennett Hill Road. This section is a seasonal road (not plowed in the winter). Down at the bottom of the hill you can see bits of water sparkling in the sun. There it turns into quite a quagmire at times. I really loved the blue of the distant hills and the dark scraps of clouds scudding by.

Here’s my setup:

I also painted a tiny creek along Bennett Road, in between US 31 and Farrell Road. As I drove past, a reflected gleam caught my eye. Of course I had to go back and paint it! I don’t know the name of this creek, so I’m titling this painting “Nameless Creek”.
