Toad Lake

“Toad Lake” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8 x 10” by Margie Guyot

It would have been a sin to stay home and not go painting! I drove over to Toad Lake, hell-bent on tackling that deep blue water. Didn’t hear any toads, though. Not many people know about Toad Lake. Good. All I’ll say is that It’s out in the middle of nowhere. There is a spot you can enter a kayak or small boat, but there are no sandy beaches or public picnic areas. One of these days I’ll take a goof-off day and bring my kayak over to try bass fishing. When I was still working at Ford, I’d go fishing every weekend. When I heard they were closing our plant – and I could retire – I thought: Good! Now I can go fishing! Alas, I’ve been retired since 2007 and haven’t gone fishing even once! Too many other things to do.

Right in the front of the painting is a swirl of algae. I thought it was fascinating. Amazing colors. Surreal. The best vantage point for a good photo was to step down a gravely bank and climb onto a huge culvert but there was also the likely chance of ending up in the drink. So this is about the best I could do:

Here’s my setup:

  1. My favorite part are the cattails. .. and I think yours are better than the original. ;-). Glad you decided to play it safe. Not good to end up in the drink, maybe phone wet, and no one else around.

  2. Picture of Toad Lake, algae and water reflections; myriads of shapes, colors and wavelets, almost surreal. Could a painting capture all that going on?
