Our first day of wintery weather: bleak with a mix of rain and snow. What better day to just camp out in the studio and figure out how to paint rose leaves! Kind of maddening, but alas — the fairies won’t paint them for me. I listened to the opera “Romeo and Juliet” (recorded in China, of all places!) on NPR. And here’s Bernie, peeking out from the rose patch. And that butterfly — yesterday I’d used a mounted butterfly for the model. But who knows where that thing lived? Indonesia? I pulled out my handy book of butterlies of Michigan and had to do a little revision. It’ll be a female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail.

Here’s how things looked at the end of the day.
