It was a beautiful, sunny day and I felt guilty for not going out plein air painting. Instead, I parked myself in the studio and worked on painting in the fabric designs. At least I could sit in a warm studio instead of freezing my face and toes out along Lake Michigan. And two of the cats were keeping me company, purring encouragements and begging for treats.
This painting is kind of an experiment. And what better time of the year for experiments? I’d never used such complicated-looking fabric. But I just love the works of Kehinde Wiley — and he uses wild wallpaper designs as backgrounds. Although he has the luxury of hiring assistants to paint all those intricate designs. I find his work very inspiring.
