Late Day – Barnes Park

“Late Day – Barnes Park” — plein air field study in oil on birch panel 8×10″ by Margie Guyot

A rare treat today: the sun came out! We’re so used to gloom up here. Everybody seemed to perk up — the birds, the possums, the cats — even me! I threw my painting gear into the truck and drove down to Barnes Park. It’s about 2 miles from my house – and right on the shore of beautiful Lake Michigan. We’ve only had an inch or two of snow so far, so I had the luxury of driving right to the edge of the hillside. Normally I’d have to park quite a distance away and slog through knee-deep snow. Ugh!

Instead of hiking down the steep and icy (!) hillside to the water, I set up and painted this view. Lake Michigan is starting to freeze, filling the shoreline with the beginnings of ice pyramids. This is a popular spot for people to come and cross-country ski or walk their dogs. I’m always amazed at the size of some of those footprints — were they just dogs — or wolves?
