Never one to let the grass grow under my feet, I set up a new still life and drew it in today, The weather here was beastly, so it was a perfect day to hole up in the studio. One of my major rules: always paint what’s most likely to rot, wilt or die first. And I’ve been on an orange kick, so I needed to paint them in and be done with it ASAP. The bananas were super-green when I bought them last week and they’re just beginning to show a little color. I tried peeling one yesterday but it was just plain nasty, nasty, nasty! That bunch will end up in the compost pile for sure.
The grapes are good-old plastic, snagged at a junk shop a few years ago. Same with the orange dishes. The handwoven basket I bought while touring the Panama Canal a few years ago.
Some of you might find that plant a bit familiar. It’s a monstrous begonia that my snow-bird friend, Lucy, drops off every fall before she heads south, I’ve used it in paintings several times, Love the colors and the wild designs on the leaves!
Oh, and that tablecloth might look familiar as well. I’ve used it in paintings several times. Each time I paint it, I swear it’s the last time! Pretty complicated. But — what else is there to do in deep winter?
