Ogletree Creek

“Ogletree Creek” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8×10″ by Margie Guyot

Ogletree Creek runs SE out of Toad Lake. To get to this spot, you’d need to go north on S. Dennis Road, off Bennett Hill Road. It’s a seasonal road — impossible to navigate during the snowy months, as the county road crew does not plow. I found this spot in mid-afternoon. Sorry, I forgot to bring my camera along! Painted with one very frayed-out brush….

The very first time I painted this spot was when I first moved up here, around 2008. It’s pretty secluded. I’d gone there early one morning and set up to paint on this spot. I was about halfway into the painting when I heard the oddest croaks! I was kind of nervous — maybe a bear was about to attack! Then I found the source of the coarks: a dead tree along the creek, with about 8 or 10 turkey vultures. They had spread their wings out to soak up the early morning sun and were croaking — I presume with pleasure,.

It’s a beautiful spot, but it’s also one of those “wild back roads” where I imagine the theme from “Deliverance” is playing…..
