My “Biggie Easel”

Yep — that’s a stepladder, a lawn chair and an antique birthing chair. I wanted to do a very large plein air painting in the swamp. None of my “regular” plein air easels were big enough to hold a 24×48″ painting, so this is what I rigged up. I wouldn’t recommend it for a very windy day, however!

Yesterday I’d tried to do a large painting based on a much smaller plein air. I thought it looked hideous. There’s just no substitute from painting directly from life!

So this morning I was determined to cobble something together that would hold the 24×48″ board. I selected things that were light enough to carry through the woods and out into the swamp: a folding lawn chair and an aluminum step ladder. The birthing chair is an antique I picked up at an estate sale.
