
Some novelists say they have to know everything that will happen to their characters right from the get-go. Other novelists say they haven’t a clue at the start. I’ve seen elaborate, quite detailed preliminaty sketches some artists have done before they pick up a brush. Well, I’ve never been one of them. I just kind of figure it out as I go. I find meditation helpful. And sometimes my muse wakes me up in the middle of the night with ideas — solutions. This morning I “saw” my 2 cement lions in this composition.
And here they are in my front yard, begging to be painted. With Picasso, my furry supervisor:

I’d wanted a cake with lighted candles in the foreground. How to make candles glow? How can I make a horse saddle reflect candle light? What would possums look like demolishing a cake?

And what would this painting be without a praying gnome?

Chaos — for some it’s distracting; I find it inspiring. I leave you, dear reader, with a glimpse of my studio this afternoon:
