
I came out to the studio this morning, not knowing what to paint. Of course I had to paint something! And the dark, cold, gloomy weather was hanging on, so a still life was just the ticket. I started with a couple silk zinnias, then went into the back room, rummaging around to find something – anything! – that might make an interesting combination. I’d never painted the Japanese lantern flowers before, so I thought it was high time for that. And this painting is relatively small — just 16×20″. It was a challenge to draw the glass pitcher in, but I needed to do that to keep my mind off politics!
Picasso was out on patrol when I shot the photo (above). But he was with me most of the day. Here’s how things looked after about the first hour today:
