Deer Tracks

“Deer Tracks” – plein air field study in oil on wood panel 10×8″ by Margie Guyot

The sun surprised us all and made a rare appearance today. I’d been eyeing patterns of deer tracks here for weeks. Finally loaded up my sled with gear and went out into my yard to try painting. Didn’t know if it would turn out, but it was a fantastic challenge! Here’s my setup:

I also have one of those ancient sleds (probably 75+ years old) that doesn’t work at all well for transporting heavy equipment in the snow. That thing is like lugging a dead cow. I got this plastic one from ACE last year and found it’s worth every penny!

As soon as I finished painting, the clouds rolled back in, so you won’t see the great shadows in this photo:

It was a miracle to get to paint in actual sunshine for a change! Good thing I’d decided to paint in my own yard. If I’d tried to drive someplace, the sun would have been clouded over before I could pick up a brush.
