
This was the first stop: the northern tip of Torch Lake. A perfect day: about 60 degrees and sunny. The clouds looked so spectacular I just HAD to get out and paint!
And here’s my setup:

From there I headed east a few miles, snaking down some seasonal roads to a perennial favorite: Toad Lake Road. This harvested cornfield caught my eye:

From there, the road swung north a little, then east. Again, this section of the road was marked “seasonal”: avoid in winter! I found another favorite spot. This view is an offshoot of Toad Lake Road. Not a public road, so I carefully parked on the side. I’m always careful not to tresspass or leave trash. Don’t want to get the farmers mad at me!

I had to throw on my jacket as this was all very shady. And it was only 60 degrees. One thing I’ve learned up here: always keep extra gear in the car: raincoat, warm jacket, hat, gloves, water, etc. Even a shovel and a hatchet! And here’s my setup:
