Fawn in Bracken

The other day I set up my easel along the driveway and tried my hand at painting bracken. It was one of those days where I really wanted to plein air paint — but didn’t want to actually GO anywhere. I’d never tried painting bracken before. Didn’t know if I could make a halfway decent painting out of it. Here’s my setup:

A week or so ago I picked up a roadkill fawn and did a painting study of it, thinking maybe I’d want to do a painting to fit a really cool Facebook Marketplace frame I’d bought. It was a rainy day, so I set up my easel in the garage. Propped up the fawn’s head with a flowerpot. Here’s my setup:

This morning I took off, aiming to do some plein air landscapes. I got one in, then decided to come home and paint something here. We’re having a heatwave, so I ended up inside my studio. Hmmm — why not see if I can add that fawn to the bracken? Here’s my setup in the studio:

I just might do a larger fawn-in-the-woods painting that will fit the FB Marketplace frame afterall……
