Day 1: Sunny Daffodils

Here it is, a dark, drizzly day in northern Michigan. But it’s a perfect day for sitting in a nice, warm studio, looking at pretty flowers. Over the years I’ve planted about 2,000 daffodils in my yard. I finally got brave enough to try to paint them. Daffodils are a challenge! That fabric is a beautiful (and expensive!) silk scarf I found in an upscale resale shop recently. Soon as I saw it, I knew I’d be using it in a painting.

This is how it looked after the first hour (below). Pitiful, isn’t it? I decided I should post photos of how things look in the beginning — which is usually hideous. But I know that if I stick with it, I can usually get it to come out pretty good in the end. I tell people the key to making a good painting is learning to control your panic!
