Swamp in Winter

“Swamp in Winter” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8×10″ by Margie Guyot

We had a rare few hours of sunshine today around here, so I threw my gear into the car and took off to paint. This spot is on Brandt Road, off Old Dixie Highway. I’ve always loved looking at this swamp; today was the first time I ever tried painting it. Most of the dead trees you’re seeing are dead ash trees. And there’s a healthy stand of cattails in the back. That’s red ossier dogwood in the foreground. Of course you notice the clouds. Every time I see a beautiful blue sky and decide to go painting, the clouds roll in.

It was cold, so I cheated a little and painted from inside my car….

It was completely clouded-over before I could finish (of course). After this I came back home & worked on my easel painting some more. Today I was adding rose leaves. Had to use my imagination — the leaves were fairly well done-for. Never a dull moment around here….
