Painting on the Solstice

“Kiessel Road, Looking West” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8×10″ by Margie Guyot

I ended up on Kiessel Road. This first painting is looking west. Yes, having a 4WD vehicle is a good thing around here!

And here’s my setup:

From here I continued along the road as it curved south. I decided to stop and paint an interesting-looking path that snakes out into the woods. That’s the remains of a cornfield on the right.

As I was setting up to paint this one, I couldn’t find my turpentine can. What???? Did I leave it at the last spot??? Yikes! I left my easel sitting and drove back to my last spot (about a mile). Yes, there it was. Oh brother! Most of the turps had spilled out, but there was enough to get by. Not many people use this road, so my easel was safe (thank goodness!).

Last fall I noticed this path. It’s on private property, so I didn’t want to take any chances. It appears to curve around a ridge, through a maple woods. I’d like to return to this spot again in the spring. Here’s my setup:
