
It was almost summer-like today: up to 40 degrees and periods of sunshine! Of course I had to get out and paint something. This is a field on Farrel Road, just north of M88, east of Eastport. It was a bit of a challenge (well, they ALL are!) — As soon as I sketched in the composition, the clouds rolled back and I lost the colors and patterns of sunlight and shadow. Darn! Seemed like every time I’d be bent over, washing out my brush, the sunshine would pop back in, only to disappear as soon as I’d loaded my brush up with “sunshine color” (white with a teeny dab of yellow ochre). And the cloud cover gave a more grayish tone to the shadows. When the sky cleared, the shadows became bluer. Maybe when this is dry I might try giving the shadows a touch of a blue wash.
