
I’ve been eyeing this view for a while. What better day to get out there and paint than Thanksgiving? Chilly and dark, with occasional bouts of graupel falling onto my palette, it was otherwise ideal. And convenient — this is right at the end of my driveway. I had my warm gear on and knew a cup of hot coffee was just a few steps away.
The foliage colors were so drab I brightened things up a touch, making it a little more golden. Tamaracks (a.k.a. “larch”) are deciduous. In the fall they change from green to yellow to golden and finally to a beautiful, deep caramel before dropping. The driveway’s covered in their fallen needles, appearing a bit golden-orange. And the stuff in the foreground? Dried bracken and aspen leaves. Do I ever rake this? Naaaaaa!
