Some Fall Landscapes

“Quiet Spot on Bennett Road” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8 x 10″ by Margie Guyot

This has been the rainiest Fall I can remember! My painter friends and I have been quite frustrated. Nobody wants to paint dark, gloomy paintings and even fewer people want to hang them on their walls. But we had 1 1/2 days of sun in the past 6 or 8 weeks, so I’ll post what I’ve been up to.

Here’s my setup for “Quiet Spot on Bennett Road”. It was the first one of the day and the shadows were long across the road.

From there I drove a couple blocks down the road to another favorite view. Some farmers planted a lot of black walnut trees in this area many years ago. Some have grown quite large. I checked to be sure all the walnuts had fallen before I parked under one of those big monsters. No fun getting conked! Over the hill the road connects with US 31, the route between Charlevoix and Traverse City.

And here’s my setup:

It’d been so long since we’d had a sunny day around here, I just had to crank out a third one:

And here’s my setup:

I’d really like to find out what the story is with those misshapen trees. To the right, most of the trees are gone. Just lots of scrub bushes and a few cedars (or spruce) daring to peek up. Maybe it’s too swampy? Here’s what it looks like to the right (below). And yes, one of these days I might try to paint this from a photo:

The last partly sunny day we had, I went down to the lake and painted this brilliant birch:

Of course the clouds rolled in after about 15 minutes so I kind of had to guess at things. Here’s my setup. And yes, it was ICY COLD wind blowing off the lake….

And last, but not least, here’s a view I love to paint: my driveway!
