View from the Swamp Path

“View From the Swamp Path – Mid-October” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8 x 10″ by Margie Guyot

Every time I started getting ready to drive somewhere “interesting” to paint, it clouded up and it sprinkled. So I putzed in the garden, keeping my eye on the sky. So much for going anywhere! So I decided to stay here and paint something right at home. The cats (3 of them) prefer me at home anyway. They think that every time I open the studio door they’ll get a treat. Anyway — this view is looking south, towards the studio building. And this is the first year for my celebrated “Swamp Path” — a wonderful, pressure-treated wooden walkway out to the creek. Or, as we called it back in Iowa, “crick”. The grass out there grows about 8 feet high and it’d been impossible until now for me to claw my way out to the creek, except in spring or winter.

Another great addition has been my Gorilla cart. Saves a lot of wear-and-tear on the old rotator cuffs!

Not ten minutes after I finished painting this, the sky darkened and raindrops fell. Here’s my setup:

Oh — and here’s a photo of how this “path” looked before, when it was just odd boards thrown down, here and there. And that’s my loyal Picasso….

  1. Love this painting! The roofline of the building makes it so very much more interesting. It looks like the path to a most wonderful place that we haven’t discovered yet.

  2. Really love this and the story! Back in Indiana we also call them “cricks”. 😁 Happy to add this to our Northern Michigan home along with several of your Irises.
