Miles Road

“Miles Road” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8 x 10″ by Margie Guyot

Another gorgeous day here in northern Michigan! This is right before the big Fall color change. Goldenrod and queene anne’s lace are blooming like mad. Wild asters along the road are covered in bees. Hummingbirds have flown the coop. Miles Road runs for miles (ha ha! Sorry — couldn’t resist!), going north and south off Essex/East Jordan Road. Only one truck passed as I painted. A little fruit stand behind me had a “Free — help yourself!” sign, so I took some jalepenos. I painted this in late morning, catching the long shadows across the road. To the right is a ridge covered with pines and maples. In the foreground there are a lot of maples and some kind of swamp-type willow that is covered with catkins in the spring. Every year I promise myself to do a painting with those “swamp pussywillows” but haven’t done it yet. Maybe next year?

Here’s my setup:
