Where Antrim Creek Empties into Lake Michigan

“Where Antrim Creek Empties into Lake Michigan” — plein air field study in oil on wood panel 8 x 10″ by Margie Guyot

Even though it’s only about 3 miles from my house, this is the first time I’ve visited this spot this year, thanks to a bout with sciatica. Parking is up on the hill, then it’s a long, twisty hike down to the beach. My wagon has extra-wide wheels, supposedly making it easy to pull through the sand, but it was still a bitch. Almost like dragging a dead pig. Still, it was better than carrying everything.

The abstract quality of this scene was very exciting to me. I had to set the easel legs on flat rocks to keep it out of the water. Every time the wind changed direction the ripples and colors changed. Seagulls scolded me (or maybe they were laughing?). I didn’t dare use my shade umbrella. It surely would have blown away — and I wasn’t about to run along and chase it. I wasn’t sure how the colors really looked in the sun’s glare, but I guess it’s OK.

Here’s a photo of my setup. I couldn’t step back any further or I’d be in the water,
