A View of Lake Michigan

“A View of Lake Michigan” — oil on wood panel 8 x 10″ by Margie Guyot

This was painted halfway down the very steep hill at Barnes Park in Eastport. The trail is very sandy and rocky. My gear is heavy and it was a challenge to paint this and get back up that hill without doing a Humpty-Dumpty act all the way down to the water! Not completely recovered from sciatica yet, but feeling frisky enough to give it a shot. I tucked into a shady spot. Standing in the blazing sun today would have killed me. Ugh. Further out in the water there was a party of about 20 happy people, laughing and playing some kind of game. A kayaker paddled around and a small plane buzzed overhead. Barnes Park is a fabulous park for camping, although a rainstorm is moving in. By the time I finished painting, the sky was completely overcast. Tonight as the rain falls, I’ll be laying in my nice, soft, dry bed, thinking about the campers in their soggy tents….

Here’s my setup:

And here’s a view of my easel, halfway down that very steep hill. The picture doesn’t do it justice. Some guy around my age came staggering up that hill, gasping, “I remember running up this hill!”
